BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) is a chemical compound that has a variety of uses, including:
  • PreservativeBHT is used as a preservative in foods, animal feed, oils, petroleum products, rubber, and plastics. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers BHT to be "generally recognized as safe" when used in accordance with good manufacturing practices. 
  • AntioxidantBHT is an antioxidant that helps maintain the properties and performance of products like cosmetics, creams, lotions, shampoos, makeup, and sunscreen products. 
  • MedicineBHT is used as a medicine to treat genital herpes, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), and cold sores. 
  • PesticideBHT is used as an inert antioxidant ingredient in pesticide formulations for application to animals. 
BHT is a lipophilic organic compound that is chemically a derivative of phenol. It is metabolized by microsomal enzymes to reactive acid metabolites, which can bind to cellular macromolecules, such as proteins and DNA, and cause reproductive toxicity and cancer. BHT is typically applied to the fat phase of a product at a concentration of 0.01–0.1% and is best used in combination with EDTA. It is for external use only.
